The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality recently conducted an oversight of the Charles Mopeli Stadium, revealing a heartbreaking reality for the community. Once a symbol of pride and aspiration for the people of the Eastern Free State, the stadium now stands as a stark reminder of unfulfilled promises and shattered hopes. Please see pictures here, here, here and here.
The Free State government, Thabo Mofutsanyane District, and Maluti-A-Phofung municipalities have squandered millions of Rands on purported refurbishments and upgrades. Regrettably, R14 million has already been spent on the so-called phase 1 of upgrades, with an additional R26 million allocated for phase 2. Shockingly, despite these colossal expenditures, the stadium remains in a deplorable state. Two companies were entrusted with this project; however, one abandoned its responsibilities, citing financial constraints after delivering substandard work.
The dire situation at the stadium is a testament to the devastating effects of corruption on the lives of ordinary South Africans. During our oversight, we found no evidence of upgrades or refurbishments. The pitch is non-functional, and the toilets, furniture, and every aspect of the stadium have fallen into disrepair.
Corruption and neglect have robbed the people of the Free State, especially those in Maluti-A-Phofung, of their livelihoods, dreams, and dignity. The rampant corruption and neglect at Charles Mopeli Stadium have not only drained public funds but have also shattered the aspirations and pride of the Free State community, plunging them into despair.
The DA is committed to monitoring all events transpiring at the stadium. We will track the progress, or lack thereof, holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The resilient people of Maluti-A-Phofung deserve far better, and it is imperative that those contributing to the dismal state of Charles Mopeli are brought to justice.
