A major breakthrough in the fight against the widespread vandalism of municipal streetlights has been secured through effective engagement, targeted awareness efforts, and close cooperation with key stakeholders in the local scrap metal industry.
Through these joint efforts, credible information was gathered that successfully led to the identification of the individuals responsible for targeting the town’s electricity infrastructure.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) acted on this critical information and deployed specialised intelligence resources, resulting in the tracing and arrest of two suspects, both residents of Bohlokong, Bethlehem.
During the operation, a significant quantity of stolen copper was recovered and immediately handed over to SAPS as crucial evidence.
While the identities of the suspects cannot be disclosed at this stage due to the ongoing legal process, both individuals are expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
To ensure that these crimes against public infrastructure are dealt with as seriously as possible, the DA caucus has engaged directly with representatives of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Bethlehem to request that bail be strongly opposed.
The DA remains committed to protecting municipal assets, safeguarding community infrastructure, and ensuring that those responsible for infrastructure sabotage are held fully accountable.
