The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the high-level investigation into the ANC’s failures in Vogelfontein.

This crisis is not new. As far back as 2016/2017, during the implementation of the RDP housing project, the Dihlabeng DA caucus conducted an oversight visit to Vogelfontein. Serious concerns were raised about the project’s condition, poor management, and possible political interference.

At the time, the DA also noted allegations of involvement by individuals with political connections, including references to the family of a former premier. As a result, the DA reported the matter to the Green Scorpions. However, it was regarded as political at that stage and was not investigated further on its merits.

This confirms that the problems have existed for many years and that early warning signs were ignored.

Today, residents are still faced with:

  • Incomplete and uninhabitable houses.
  • Sewer and water systems that are not functioning.
  • Serious structural and basic defects.

This ongoing situation urgently strips people of their dignity and can no longer be tolerated.

The DA is currently also deeply concerned about the condition of the roads in Vogelfontein. Following the recent rains, the main gravel roads are almost impassable, and residents are struggling to reach their homes.

Despite this, data shows that Vogelfontein in Ward 11 has a collection rate of approximately 71%. Residents are therefore paying for services but are not receiving them. Why must those who meet their obligations continue to suffer under these conditions in an ANC-run municipality?

Access to proper housing and basic service delivery is not a privilege, but a constitutional right.

The DA calls for this investigation to result in real accountability and immediate intervention.

The time for excuses is over; the residents of Vogelfontein deserve action.
