The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nketoana notes with serious concern the closure of the Nketoana Local Municipality’s Local Economic Development Department offices in Reitz, which has already had a severe negative impact on service delivery and administrative operations.

On 20 January 2026, the Department of Labour inspected the building and found that the structure does not comply with minimum safety requirements and poses a serious risk to employees and members of the public.

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), the building was immediately closed. Several serious shortcomings were identified, including the absence of first-aid facilities and fire safety notices.

It is concerning that building inspectors and town planners are expected to operate from offices that do not meet basic safety standards.

Since the closure, staff have not been redeployed to alternative offices, severely disrupting service delivery. Employees are currently working from home without access to essential data and systems.

The DA raised this issue during a special Council meeting on 29 January 2026. Instructions were issued to the Municipal Manager to intervene immediately, provide alternative office space, and obtain quotations for building repairs.

The DA will continue to monitor the matter and apply pressure on municipal management until service delivery is fully restored and staff are provided with a safe, compliant work environment.
