The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Kopanong will write to the municipal manager to demand immediate enforcement of municipal by-laws, the impounding of roaming livestock, and compensation for affected residents, following serious and ongoing problems with roaming animals in Philippolis.
Horses, cattle, goats, sheep and pigs are freely wandering through residential areas, posing risks to public safety and causing extensive damage to both private and public property.
The situation is worsened by emerging farmers who allow their animals to roam unchecked within residential neighbourhoods. Furthermore, there appears to be little to no monitoring or proper care of these animals.
As a direct result, gardens are destroyed, infrastructure is damaged, and residents are forced to carry the financial burden of repairs themselves. A vehicle has already been damaged due to these roaming animals.
Despite the growing impact on the community, Kopanong Local Municipality has failed to take decisive action to address the problem. This continued inaction not only endangers residents but also undermines lawful animal control and responsible farming practices.
The DA will further request a clear action plan with timeframes for enforcement, and will push for the issuing of fines to negligent owners to ensure accountability and prevent further harm. This situation is entirely unacceptable and requires urgent intervention to restore order and protect the community.
