The Democratic Alliance (DA) is demanding answers following the two-year delay in implementing Council’s resolution to dissolve MAP Water. The DA will urgently engage with the Acting CEO, Mr Mqenebe reurgent seeking clarity on the reasons for the continued delay. We will also ask for a clear timeframe for the implementation of Council’s resolution.

This continued failure to implement a lawful Council decision raises serious concerns that the Executive Mayor is disregarding the authority of Council. The precise reasons for the delay remain unclear, but what is certain is that the prolonged inaction is deepening instability within the municipality.

The consequence of this failure is borne not by politicians, but by the residents of Maluti-a-Phofung. Communities are experiencing recurring water outages, with some residents reportedly going days without reliable access to water. Two years of delay have translated into two years of compromised service delivery and the erosion of residents’ dignity. Access to water is a basic human right, and when leadership stalls, it is the community that suffers.

Residents, staff and councillors alike are entitled to clarity and decisive leadership. The DA maintains that Council resolutions are binding and must be implemented without fear or favour. Any continued disregard for Council’s authority constitutes a serious breach of governance and accountability.

The DA will continue to pursue this matter until the resolution is implemented in full and stable, accountable water service delivery is restored to the people of Maluti-a-Phofung.
