The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply concerned about the worsening state of service delivery in the Mafube Local Municipality, despite the municipality being placed under Section 154 intervention by the provincial government.

During the festive period of December 2025 and January 2026, residents of Mafube faced severe disruptions in essential services. Communities in Frankfort, Namahadi, Phomolong, Cornelia, Extension 9, and Tweeling/Mafahlaneng were left without water due to the suspension of water tanker contracts, which were terminated in August 2025 because the municipality was unable to pay service providers.

Waste management services were equally neglected, forcing residents to arrange their own refuse removal. The oxidation pond project in Namahadi, aimed at stopping sewage flow into the Wilge River, was suspended due to non-payment, despite being under court order and funded by government grants.

Adding to the crisis, the controversial appointment of Sibongile Security Services has raised serious concerns, despite not being the lowest bidder. The company was appointed and allegedly paid R5 million in December 2025, while other service providers responsible for essential services remain unpaid. This decision, made under the oversight of the Free State Department of CoGTA as part of the Section 154 intervention, undermines the principles of transparency and accountability. The DA is appalled by this decision and has demanded clarity from the Free State MEC of CoGTA.

Additionally, we are alarmed by the lack of urgency and accountability displayed by the municipality’s management despite meetings with contractors and service providers. Additionally, the Acting Municipal Manager admitted that no funds were available to address these critical issues.

The DA has escalated these issues to the Provincial Department of CoGTA for urgent investigation. We will continue to advocate for proactive measures under Section 139 of the Constitution to restore essential services and ensure accountability. The DA remains committed to rebuilding Mafube Municipality and delivering the services our communities deserve. Together, we can achieve meaningful change.
