The Democratic Alliance in Mangaung will write to the municipal manager, Sello More, to urgently present a long-term reform and phased plan to eradicate unsafe pit toilets and replace them with dignified, hygienic sanitation infrastructure for the residents of Thaba Nchu.
Heavy rains have intensified the foul smell and overflow of these facilities, exposing residents, particularly children and older people, to severe health risks.
- Stagnant waste and rainwater increase the risk of cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid.
- The pungent stench and airborne bacteria compromise residents’ respiratory health.
- Overflowing pits create breeding grounds for disease-carrying insects, worsening the spread of infections.
Families were forced to endure indignity and stress during what should have been a season of joy and rest.
The persistence of these conditions reflects systemic neglect and a lack of accountability from municipal leadership. Despite repeated warnings, no emergency interventions were undertaken to safeguard communities during the festive season. This failure undermines the constitutional right to dignity, health, and safe sanitation.
We urge the municipality to implement emergency sanitation interventions, including disinfection, drainage, and the provision of mobile toilets, in high-risk areas immediately.
The people of Thaba Nchu cannot continue to suffer indignity and health risks due to municipal complacency.
The DA will continue to fight for radical accountability and urgent action to restore dignity, protect public health, and ensure that every resident enjoys safe and humane sanitation.
