The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tokologo Local Municipality is deeply concerned about the ongoing electricity crisis that continues to cripple our communities and local economy.

Despite a 98% collection rate from residents and businesses, the municipality owes Eskom more than R390 million. This staggering debt reflects gross mismanagement and has left Tokologo unable to provide its people with reliable electricity.

Across all three towns, residents endure collapsing poles, ineffective circuit breakers, and undersized transformers, leading to inadequate winter supply. In Boshof and Dealesville, persistent substation failures leave households and businesses without power for extended periods. This undermines livelihoods, disrupts education, and drives away investment, worsening unemployment and poverty.

The Minister of Electricity appointed the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) as an intermediary between Eskom and the Tokologo Local Municipality 12 months ago to manage dispute issues.

While this intervention is noted, it does not address the root cause: Tokologo Municipality’s incapacity to manage electricity infrastructure. The municipality lacks qualified electricians and the technical expertise required to maintain and upgrade the system. As a result, residents are left in the dark, literally and figuratively.

The DA will table a motion in council for Eskom to take full responsibility for electricity provision in Tokologo. Transferring operations will ensure qualified professionals manage the system, guarantee accountability, restore a reliable supply, and lay the foundation for economic recovery.

Tokologo deserves more than empty promises; it deserves a lasting solution. We stand firm in our commitment to fight for reliable electricity, economic stability, and dignity for every resident.
