The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State conveys our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Cllr Dalena Dennis, who passed away on 30 November. Born on 16 September 1953, Dalena devoted much of her life to public service and to the people of Mangaung.
Dalena was first elected as a ward councillor on 1 March 2006, serving two terms representing Gardeniapark, Wilgehof and the UFS campus before becoming a proportional councillor. At the time of her passing, she was most likely the longest-serving sitting councillor in the metro.
Before Mangaung achieved metropolitan status in 2011, Dalena served as the DA Caucus Leader in the Motheo District Municipality. Her leadership extended to the provincial level, where she served as Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the DA in the Free State. At the time of her passing, she held the important role of Chief Whip of the DA Caucus in Mangaung.
Beyond her political career, Dalena was deeply rooted in her community. She served faithfully as Chief Deacon of the Dutch Reformed Church in Hospitaal Park, where she was loved and respected for her compassion and commitment.
Dalena will be remembered for her dedication, loyalty, friendship and strong leadership. Her loss will be deeply felt across the organisation and the communities she served for nearly two decades.
The DA in the Free State also pays special tribute to her husband, Peter, who stood by her side as her greatest supporter and volunteer throughout her years of service.
We also extend our heartfelt condolences to her sons, Abrie and Herholdt, and to her grandchildren. We wish them strength, comfort and peace during this period of profound grief.
May her legacy continue to inspire us all.
