The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Moqhaka will write to the Municipal Manager and the MMC for Technical Services to urgently address the unavailability of stormwater teams to assist with drain maintenance, especially during the rainy season.
During a recent site visit to various stormwater drains, it has come to light that no maintenance is being done on them.
Various drains are open, and some are fully covered with sand and refuse. In a recent letter sent to the council, it was made clear that the Moqhaka municipality does not share the concern.
The roads and storm. The water department does not have the main power to maintain these drains, nor the equipment to clean these drains, especially before the rainy season.
During the rainy season, these unmaintained drains cannot divert surface water, leading to flooding on various streets and yards and severe damage to road infrastructure.
Despite a budget of R23 million set aside for stormwater drains, no service provider can be sourced to supply the municipality with lids.
Stagnant water is also a serious health risk, and, where possible, external contractors are used, but they mainly prioritise sewer lines.
Other challenges include service providers not being paid on time, which makes them reluctant to assist.
The unmaintained stormwater drains are a safety risk for the residents. We will continue to put pressure on the municipality.
