The Democratic Alliance (DA) will submit formal questions to the Municipal Manager and Executive Mayor of Dihlabeng Municipality regarding the disaster response, funding allocations, and recovery timelines following the devastating windstorm that struck Slabbets on 1 November 2025. We are taking this action to ensure that affected families receive urgent relief, proper assistance, and accountability from the local government.
On Saturday, 1 November 2026, Slabbets, a rural settlement within Dihlabeng Local Municipality in the Free State, was struck by a violent windstorm that caused widespread destruction. The storm, which formed as part of a larger weather system affecting the eastern Free State, brought with it gale-force winds that tore through homes, community infrastructure, and public facilities.
Eyewitness accounts describe the wind as “terrifying and relentless”, with roofs ripped off homes and walls collapsing. The storm lasted less than an hour, but its impact will be felt for months to come. Preliminary assessments indicate households suffered partial or complete structural damage, with many homes rendered uninhabitable.
The DA has visited the affected area and spoken directly with residents. Their stories are heartbreaking: This is not just a weather event; it is a crisis of dignity, safety, and basic human rights.
While Dihlabeng has activated its disaster management protocols, we are concerned about the pace, coordination, and adequacy of the response.
There is a lack of clear communication between municipal officials and affected residents. Many families report not knowing when or if they will receive assistance.
The DA commends these efforts and encourages continued collaboration between civil society and government. We also call on South Africans from all walks of life to support Slabbets through donations, volunteerism, and advocacy.
We will submit formal questions to the Municipal Manager and Executive Mayor regarding the disaster response, funding allocations, and timelines for recovery.
DA councillors will continue to visit affected areas, document needs, and assist residents in accessing relief services. The Slabbets windstorm is a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by climate change and extreme weather events. Rural and peri-urban communities are particularly vulnerable due to inadequate infrastructure, limited access to emergency services, and socio-economic marginalisation.
The DA believes that recovery must go beyond rebuilding; it must build resilience.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Slabbets. We recognise your pain, your courage, and your right to live in safety and dignity. This disaster must not be allowed to fade into silence. It must be met with action, compassion, and accountability.
