The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State extends its deepest condolences to the loved ones of  Shirley Vermaak, a former DA Councillor in the Ngwathe Local Municipality who passed away last week.

Shirley entered into politics and the DA in 1999 as a PA to the Leader in the Free State Legislature and, in 2005, became a public representative for the party in Ngwathe, where she served with distinction as a councillor for Ward 18 and later as a PR councillor until her retirement at the age of 80 in 2021.

Her commitment to community welfare was matched only by her passion for reading, scrapbooking, gardening, and knitting, activities that enriched her life and endeared her to many.

Shirley’s impact extended far beyond her professional achievements. She was admired for her generosity, kindness, and unwavering independence, qualities that resonated deeply with her family, friends, colleagues, and the residents she served.

The DA in the Free State joins in mourning the loss of Shirley Vermaak, celebrating her life as a trailblazer and a compassionate community leader whose legacy will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
