It has long been acknowledged that securing employment within the municipality often requires a demonstration of ANC affiliation through the presentation of a membership card. Regrettably, the ANC leadership in Moqhaka Local Municipality has consistently prioritised cadre deployment over the well-being of residents.

In a letter dated 20 December 2023, addressed to the Provincial ANC leadership, concerns were raised by Kroonstad-Moqhaka ANC Councillors regarding the hiring process for 120 general workers. According to the letter, not all new hires are ANC members; some are from the ACT (ex-ANC) group, side-lining ANC volunteers. This issue has prompted a demand by the ANC to halt the process, shedding light on the corruption deeply embedded within the system.

Responding to the grievances, the Executive Mayor sought a moratorium from the Municipal Manager, citing financial concerns. In line with the code of conduct for councillors (item 12a,b), it explicitly prohibits interference in the administration of any municipal department and giving instructions to council employees unless authorised. The recent meddling by councillors in staff employment directly contravenes this code and warrants an immediate investigation.

Recognising that the authority to employ staff lies solely with the Municipal Manager, any interference by councillors demands scrutiny. Consequently, we will formally lodge a complaint with the Moqhaka Speaker to initiate an investigation into the misconduct and interference exhibited by various councillors in the municipality.

The blatant use of municipal jobs as a political tool has detrimental consequences for the community, as deserving candidates are overlooked based on political affiliation rather than merit. This investigation aims to rectify these injustices, ensuring that employment within the municipality is based on competence and dedication rather than political alignment.

Furthermore, as advocates for an open society, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering change across the province. We encourage all residents to register to vote in the upcoming 2024 National and Provincial Government elections, asserting their right to contribute to a fair and equitable democratic process.
