The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ngwathe Local Municipality conducted an oversight visit to Heilbron’s Unifees Dam on Tuesday, 6 June 2023, only to discover the appalling state it was in. Please see pictures here, here, here and here.
Despite previously raising concerns about the deteriorating condition to the Municipal Manager, no response was received. The situation has now worsened, with vandalism, fires, and occupation by homeless individuals.
Disturbingly, raw sewage is also spilling directly into the dam, posing a severe health hazard to nearby residents, including those in an adjacent old age home.
The DA expressed deep concern over the lack of action taken by the ANC-led municipality to address these issues. The neglect of the Unifees Dam, once a beloved location for family activities and events, reflects the municipality’s inability to deliver services. This neglect has now resulted in contamination, with flies, mosquitoes, and other insects attracted to the raw sewage, raising the risk of cross-contamination and the spread of diseases.
The DA is calling for an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the extent of the deterioration and contamination. Additionally, the DA will submit questions to the Department of Health, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), and the National Department of Water and Sanitation to seek clarification on the water quality in the area.
The health and well-being of the community are in jeopardy, and urgent action is required to mitigate the contamination risks. The DA is committed to holding the responsible authorities accountable and ensuring that all residents have access to safe and clean water.
