Tswelopele Local Municipality recently received the Auditor General’s (AG) report on the 2022/2023 financial year. Regrettably, this marks the fourth consecutive year of receiving an unqualified opinion with findings. Despite efforts, achieving a clean audit remains elusive. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has consistently advocated for benchmarking with best-practice municipalities.
Several concerning findings were highlighted:
- Unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditures totalled R10,024,009.73;
- Lack of consequence management;
- Ineffective Audit Committee;
- Procurement conducted without due process; and
- Non-compliance with legislation.
The overall audit outcome has remained stagnant due to inadequate monitoring and implementation of corrective measures from the previous year’s audit findings. In response, the DA pledges to maintain its oversight role in the council, holding both politicians and bureaucrats accountable.
Change is imperative. We are committed to bringing change across the country and urge all residents to vote in the 2024 National and Provincial Government elections on 29 May.
