The Democratic Alliance visited the Municipal Farm section outside Ladybrand in the Mantsopa Municipality and found a community abandoned by the ANC government. The housing in the community is substandard; many roofs are still made of asbestos, and flooding is a regular occurrence. Streets are impassable and require complete rebuilding, while unemployment and crime are rife in the area. Schooling facilities are also far and few and learners are unable to attend school safely.

This community, and many like it around the province, serves as an example of the future of the Free State, which is under continued ANC governance. Unemployment and crime will continue to escalate, and infrastructure will deteriorate beyond repair.

DA councillors for the community have continuously raised these issues in council and pushed for the local government to take action to improve the lives of residents. The ANC-led council has repeatedly ignored these concerns and prefers to let residents live under these abject conditions.

The DA will pressure Mantsopa to ensure that development for this town is part of their upcoming IDP and budget with proper plans in place to start tending to the needs of this community.

Residents of the Free State must join the DA’s mission to rescue our province by voting DA on 29 May. A DA government is the only way to rescue the sinking Free State, and a DA vote on Election Day is a vote for progress.
